Grades 1-3 Assata is a young citizen of Wakanda with aspirations of joining the Dora Milaje, the warriors led by Okoye to protect Wakanda. However, when a disease leaves Assata with a permanent disability, she closes the door on her dream and goes to university instead. Despite excelling at her studies, she feels like something in her life is missing. After a serendipitous encounter with a Jabari warrior, Assata feels inspired to stop seeing her wheelchair as an obstacle and pursue becoming a Dora. Children will love the moral of this story and the agency of the main character, who asserts, "Being disabled means I may have to take paths that are different, but it doesn't mean I shouldn't still follow my dreams." With denser text than the average picture book, this story is well suited to confident readers or youngsters with longer attention spans. The distinctive, energetic illustrations use loose brushwork and mural-style images to bring this Wakandan story to life and incorporate a welcome range of diversity. An empowering and inspiring tale for all young dreamers.
