*A LitHub Most Anticipated Book of 2022*
The definitive biography of Charles Barkley, exploring his early childhood, his storied NBA career, and his enduring legacy as a provocative voice in American pop culture
He's one of the most interesting American athletes in the past fifty years. Passionate, candid, iconoclastic, and gifted both on and off the court, Charles Barkley has made a lasting impact on not only the world of basketball but pop culture at large.
Yet few people know the real Charles. Raised by his mother and grandmother in Leeds, Alabama, he struggled in his early years to fit in until he found a sense of community and purpose in basketball. In the NBA he went toe-to-toe with the biggest legends in the game, from Magic to Michael to Hakeem to Shaq. But in the years since, he has become a bold agitator for social change, unafraid to grapple, often brashly, with even the thorniest of cultural issues facing our nation today.
Informed by over 370 original interviews and painstaking research, Timothy Bella's Barkley is the most comprehensive biography to date of one of the most talked-about icons in the world of sports.

Bella's comprehensive biography follows NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley from his Leeds High School (AL) beginnings, through his playing days at Auburn University, and eventually to the NBA, where he spent 16 seasons. From 1984 to 2000, Barkley led each of his teams (the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns, and Houston Rockets) to multiple playoffs. Accounts of pivotal games are richly recreated. Barkley was known for his athleticism, toughness, and playing angry, which led to infamous fights with Bill Laimbeer and Shaquille O'Neal, to name just two. Barkley attacked life outside the basketball arena as well, with his philanthropy, public brawls, and high-stakes gambling. The coverage of Barkley's post-NBA career as a television sports analyst (2000-present) on TNT's Inside the NBA makes this biography distinctive. Washington Post reporter Bella touches on all aspects of Barkley's life without name-dropping or gossiping. It's unfortunate, however, that Barkley declined to be interviewed for the book, and his perspective is sadly missing from the pages. Narrator Korey Jackson lends his voice talents to the audiobook, providing a well-paced and engaging listening experience. VERDICT As it's been two decades since the last biography of Barkley, this new narrative is a useful update.--Kym Goering

If you've ever watched Charles Barkley on television, pontificating about the state of, well, anything, you know how interesting, polarizing, and entertaining he is all at once. Korey Jackson captures that enigmatic personality with his narration, enunciating perfectly, emotionally charging quotes when appropriate, and clearly guiding Timothy Bella's well-done biography on the former basketball star. Barkley's is an interesting story, one that Jackson clearly is invested in with his narration. This is a fair biography that takes Barkley--warts and all--from his upbringing through Auburn U., NBA stardom, television work, and off-court escapades. Jackson knows exactly when to inflect his tone to shape Bella's story of Barkley's life. M.B. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine
