Grades 3-6 Space enthusiasts will find an abundance of information on what it will take to explore and survive on the red planet in this volume in the Mission: Mars series (6 titles). It begins with similarities and differences between planetary characteristics of Earth and Mars. Readers then learn why countries wish to explore space, what work rovers have done on Mars, and what missions are planned for the near future. Obstacles to living on Mars are discussed, and current activities going on in the space program are revealed. Information is well organized into five main sections, all with interesting text, informative fact boxes, and color photographs and illustrations. An appended activity asks readers to imagine life on board a space-exploration vehicle. An appealing addition to space and technology collections.

Gr 4-7-An in-depth look at risks, challenges, and science of the next big milestone of space travel, getting humans to Mars. Each book has five chapters with the same titles; "Destination: Mars," "Traveling Through Space," "X Marks the Spot," "Exploring the Planet," and "The Future." Each title covers a different aspect of Mars missions, and occasionally repeats facts or reuses NASA photographs, but the series remains interesting despite those rare repetitions. There is a realistic emphasis on the dangers of long-term space travel on physical and mental health and hardships facing astronauts who may live on an inhospitable planet. VERDICT An essential purchase for astronomy collections.
