Book 1 of the Steambound Trilogy. When Gabby's hand turns to steam, her mom hires an engineer to build a clockwork glove. It's the last thing Gabby wants—if only she could be normal. But when her mom is attacked by something monstrous, normal is no longer an option. Now the only person she can turn to is a grizzled detective, who promises to help her become something … more.
Meanwhile, Kemple's foster dad treats him like a slave. And the beatings are getting worse. So when a rebellious girl named Josephyn arrives—with a plan to escape to the city—he doesn't hesitate. But there are creatures in Iron Bay whose slashes are worse than skin-deep. And as Kemple evolves into something inhuman, his search for a cure begins. They are strangers in a city where carriages rattle, airships rumble, and their own dark pasts continue to haunt them. Soon their paths will collide, and the girl who slays monsters will come face to face with the boy who is becoming a beast.

A girl with an amazing hand and a boy with a deadly condition collide in this YA steampunk novel by Richardson (Wild Horse, 2019), the first in a trilogy. How's this for steampunk: Gabby Lenton's hand is literally made of steam due to a bizarre disorder that manifested when she was 9. Now she has to wear a clockwork glove to cover it. Gabby isn't thrilled about the development. "I want to be normal, like everyone else," she complains to her mother, who tells her in response, "One day...you'll understand how special it is to be...well, special." When her mother is murdered by a mysterious creature that breaks into their home, Gabby seeks help from Detective Shaw, who promises to help her catch the beast. As they begin to search the city's shadowy precincts, Kemple is an orphan living in the house of an abusive foster father. He's used to beatings and chores--enough that he's willing to take the fall for the new girl, Josephyn, when she breaks the rules. Josephyn suggests that they escape, but once they're out in the city, Kemple is scratched by a cat. The scratch becomes infected, and Kemple begins to get sick...begins, in fact, to change. As Gabby (rechristened Brielle) and Kemple independently drift through the city's underworld--one seeking a cure, the other revenge--they discover that monsters are more numerous and more complex than either could have imagined. Richardson's prose possesses the gritty urgency of urban fantasy, particularly when describing the novel's imaginative scenery: "Pedestrians jostle against one another, as if the sidewalks have somehow become valuable property. Even the airships seem to have lost their gentle, whalelike sway--now the sky looks like a wild sea, with every dirigible behaving like a predator on the hunt." The novel takes its time getting started, but the main characters--particularly Gabby--are likable and well drawn. Despite the steampunk setting, the story has a rather classic, almost mythic structure, which will entertain those who give themselves over to the novel's somewhat leisurely pace. Two sequels are planned, and readers will be interested to see where Richardson goes with these two slow-cooked characters and their evocative milieu. An accessible yet carefully composed YA novel with a steampunk setting.

Gr 6 Up-Nine-year-old Gabby has always felt like an outsider with her clunky, mechanized goggles. A week before beginning a new school, her hand turns to steam. She can use her hand if she wears a clockwork prosthetic, but then she feels even more like a "freak." Gabby's world falls apart when her mother is mauled to death by an Alouros, a cat-like werewolf. Left in the care of Detective Shaw, Gabby becomes Brielle, hunter of the Alouros. Alternating chapters feature Kemple, a teenage boy who has just escaped an abusive foster home and come to the city of Iron Bay. When he is attacked in a darkened alley, Kemple is plunged into a feverish state and wakes to discover strange new instincts and an urge to hunt humans. A beast rages inside him, and he is forced to fight for possession of his body. This first book of a trilogy features characters who are white as the default. The description of mechanical hands and goggles suggests steampunk; however, the weak world-building creates an unclear sense of setting. VERDICT Readers will likely lose interest with the slow rising action and the choppy time jump. Not recommended.-Jocelyn Charpentier, Acton-Boxborough Regional School District, MA
