Gr 5-8-Each of the subjects profiled is a pioneer in mainstreaming an element of fashion now common but once unusual or even controversial. Each brief book is packed with often fascinating information. For example, miniskirt popularizer Mary Quant studied art education and began her career as an apprentice hat maker. Eddie Bauer got the idea for a down jacket from an uncle who had served in the Russian army. The design is colorful and eye-catching, including many illustrative photographs, both historical and stock. Brief "Fashion Factoid" sidebars offer inessential but informative facts, such as that Converse All Stars were available only in black or white until the 1960s. A "Fashion Time Machine" feature situates each clothing article in a historical context. No sources are listed, though a reference is provided to the publisher's website for curated links. VERDICT Despite the slim back matter, these are highly engaging and rich resources.

Grades 3-6 Readers may not realize that the bright, energetic fashions of today's youth exist in large part because of British fashion designer Mary Quant. At a time when young people were dressed to look like miniature adults, Quant dedicated herself to creating a distinct, new category of clothing just for themone that would reflect their vivaciousness and the more liberated views of the 1960s and '70s. Indeed, for many, fashion was a mode of rebellion. Using period photos, this book provides historical and cultural context for Quant's story, showing her at work in her boutique, Twiggy modeling a Quant dress, and miniskirt-clad protesters. Quant's use of colorful patterns and simple lines caused a stir, but not as much as her daringly short miniskirt. While the text acknowledges that there's contention regarding the iconic skirt's original designer, all agree that Quant was responsible for making it a sensation. Tracing her wildly successful career from art school to brand name, this entry in the First in Fashion series offers an illuminating look at a fearless fashionista.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
