The popular adventures of Miles Vorkosigan, a clever and outlandish science fiction hero for the modern era, continue in these three tales. In "The Mountains of Mourning," Miles is dispatched to a backcountry region of Barrayar, where he must act as detective, judge, and executioner in a controversial murder case.

In "Labyrinth," Miles adopts his alternate persona as Dendarii Mercenary Admiral Naismith for an undercover mission to rescue an important research geneticist from Jackson's Whole.

And in the title story, Miles infiltrates an escape-proof Cetagandan POW camp and plays hero to the most deeply distressed damsel of his colorful career.

The Reader's Chair brings us three novellas from the life of Miles Vorkosigan, the crippled Vor Lord from Barrayar. In "The Mountains of Mourning," Miles must play Sherlock Holmes to a murder in the woods of Barrayar. In "Labyrinth," he must rescue a geneticist trapped in Jackson's Whole. In "The Borders of Infinity," Miles must escape from a Cetagandan Prison. The team of Michael Hanson and Carol Cowen again gives us an auditory treat with their distinctive reading styles. Solid writing makes BORDERS OF INFINITY a joy to listen to. Again, there are no "end of side" markers, but it's a small price to pay for such a wonderful book. A.Z.W. Michael Hanson and Carol Cowan read three novellas in this character-driven space opera. Miles Vorkosigan is a military academy graduate, a prince, an outlaw, and a hero. Newly graduated from the academy, Miles solves a murder in one story, puts down a mad plot, and saves his father from a conspiracy. This MP3 CD version is broken into 52 scenes, ranging in length from two minutes to three-quarters of an hour. The reading is good but not terribly memorable. Dual voices are intended to provide the program with added realism: a woman to read the female parts and a man to read the males'. But Hanson reads all the narration as well as male parts, giving him the lion's share. His voice is expressive but not quite evocative enough to maintain the listener's attention or decipher the impenetrable plot. S.E.S. (c) AudioFile 2001, Portland, Maine
