Blood Will Spill, Hearts Will Break: With a fierce rivalry raging between two warring families, falling in love is the deadliest thing Sophie could do. An epic debut set outside modern-day Chicago. For Sophie, it feels like another slow, hot summer in Cedar Hill, waitressing at her family's diner and hanging out with her best friend Millie. But then someone moves into the long-abandoned mansion up the block—a family of five Italian brothers, each one hotter than the last. Unable to resist caramel-eyed Nicoli, Sophie finds herself falling for him — and willfully ignoring the warning signs. Why are Nic's knuckles cut and bruised? Why does he carry an engraved switchblade? And why does his arrogant and infuriating older brother, Luca, refuse to let her see him? As the boys' dark secrets begin to come to light, Sophie is confronted with stinging truths about her own family, too. Suddenly, she's torn between two warring dynasties: the one she's related to and the one she's now in love with. She'll have to choose between loyalty and passione. When she does, blood will spill, hearts will break. Because in this twisted underworld, dishonor can be the difference between life and death.

Sophie Gracewell has been trying to hold herself and her family together ever since her father was sent to jail for murdering a man at their diner. When the mysterious Falcone family moves into the supposedly haunted mansion in her Chicago neighborhood, Sophie and her best friend Millie are thrilledânow there are five new beautiful boys to ogle. Sophie quickly falls for Nicoli Falcone, even as she learns his family is bad news. Even more upsetting, Nicâs brothers forbid him from seeing Sophie because sheâs a Gracewell. It isnât long before Sophie realizes that the rift between the Gracewells and Falcones is wrapped up in why her father is in jail. With its families at war and star-crossed lovers caught in the middle, Doyleâs YA debut reads like a modern twist on Romeo and Juliet by way of The Sopranos. However, the use of an attempted sexual assault as a plot device to build romantic tension between Nic and Sophie detracts from this violent romantic mystery. Ages 14âup. Agent: Claire Wilson, Rogers, Coleridge & White.

Gr 9 Up-Sophie is a social pariah, working in her family's diner and laying low to escape the infamy of her father's past. When a family of attractive and mysterious brothers move into the neighborhood, Sophie's boring summer quickly escalates to murder, mayhem, and forbidden love. It is difficult to determine who the villains are in this modern-day Romeo and Juliet tale, and listeners will find their allegiances switching throughout the book. Despite a few oddly enunciated words, Laurence Bouvard does an exceptional job of narrating for a full cast of characters, including a brother-sister duo from England and a mob of Italian brothers. She captures Sophie's defiant nature with ease, steeling her voice when conflict arises and whispering when her resolve dissolves. VERDICT This first book in Doyle's "Blood for Blood" series will leave readers clawing for more.-April Everett, Rowan Public Library, Salisbury, NC

This audiobook opens with Carl Venable, head of the CIA's terrorism unit, on his deathbed. He asks Jude Brandon, a former CIA agent and his sometimes antagonist, to keep his daughter, Rachel, a doctor, safe from his archenemy, Huber. Huber wants to acquire Rachel's skills with potions and poisons. Narrator Elisabeth Rodgers takes this complex plot and propels it forward with skillful characterizations. Whether it is an English, Spanish, or German accent required, she delights listeners with her impressive interpretations. Her transitions from character to character are seamless and keep listeners tuned into the action. A fast-paced thriller and an outstanding narrator make for a great listening experience. E.E.S.
