What is a woman's greatest temptation? How far will she go to find fulfillment—and how much is she willing to lose? Tempting Fate is an unforgettable, enthralling novel about the risks and rewards of "having it all" from beloved New York Times bestselling author Jane Green.

Gabby and Elliott have been happily married for eighteen years. They have two daughters. They have a beautiful, loving home. Forty-three-year-old Gabby is the last person to have an affair. She can't relate to the way her friends desperately try to cling to the beauty and allure of their younger years. And yet she too knows her youth is quickly slipping away. She could never imagine how good it would feel to have a handsome younger man show interest in her...until the night it happens. Matt makes Gabby feel sparkling, fascinating, alive—something she hasn't felt in years. What begins as a long-distance friendship soon develops into an emotional affair. Intoxicated, she has no choice but to step ever deeper into the allure of attraction and attention, never foreseeing the life-changing consequences that lie ahead. If she makes one wrong move, she could lose everything—and find out what really matters most.

New York Times bestselling author Green (Family Pictures) returns with the story of Gabby, a 43-year-old Englishwoman living in Connecticut with her husband, Elliott, and their two teenage daughters, Alana and Olivia. Ever since she left England and her unpredictable mother, Gabby has prided herself on being surrounded with tranquility, one of the defining characteristics of her happy and long-standing marriage. During a girl’s night out with her friends in New York City, she encounters an intriguing younger man, Matt, at a bar. Gabby is flattered by his unexpected attention, but reminds herself that “once tonight is over she will once again be a middle-aged suburban housewife, caught up in the pots and pans of life.” Afterward, Gabby tries to return to normalcy, feeling safe since Matt lives far away, in California, but her intentions soon fall by the wayside. Green skillfully depicts a woman trapped between contentment and temptation, crafting an insightful look into married life and middle age.

Jane Green's narration of her novel is proof of how hard it can be for an author to read her own work. However, even the most accomplished, spellbinding narrator would have a difficult time rescuing this overly long, melodramatic story. Green's delivery reinforces the unattractive, self-centered personality of Gabby, the main character. The other characters hold little interest, and her reading does nothing to infuse them with life. Overall, Green sounds condescending, as if the listener might not be sharp enough to understand the nuances of this story of selfishness and betrayal. The implausible ending reinforces this as an audiobook that gives "chick lit" a bad name. N.E.M. © AudioFile 2014, Portland, Maine

Gabby and Elliot are in their forties and happily married, with two daughters. But when Gabby goes on a girls' night out to a bar and meets Matt, a handsome man who pays attention to her the way her husband doesn't anymore, a brief affair ensues. However, this story is not about the sexual affair itself but the devastating aftermath for Gabby, Elliot, their daughters, and others touched by her actions. Author Green skillfully narrates with a distinct voice for each character. While her reading is not perfect, her thoughtful application of emphasis adds a great deal. VERDICT Recommended for public libraries.--Karen Perry, Univ. of North Carolina, Greensboro
