      Hendrix, the youngest son of the Alyonian royal family, has been framed by his sister Taryn for the murder of their parents. While he copes with the trauma with a serious drug habit, he and his companion Aypax flee Alyonia in search of allies. Meanwhile, Taryn consolidates her power and claims the throne, making new alliances and breaking old ones, destabilizing Alyonia and its neighbors. Taaivetti, the true heir apparent, is commanding an army at the border, fighting an implacable foe grown increasingly bold. There are prophecies coming to pass; the dust from comets that gave the ancients strange, magical powers is, as it turns out, not so mythical after all. Who will gain control of it remains to be seen; Hendrix and his companions are stubborn, but Taryn has the advantage of a position of authority. Dust is a reasonably entertaining diversion, with the violence of fantasy empires at war, moral quandaries for its most youthful protagonist, and mysterious, ancient tales coming to life as the story progresses.
